Charlie Sheen Arrested

He may be best known for starring in Two and a Half Men, but Charlie Sheen now has one giant problem on his hands.

The actor has been arrested for second-degree assault, menacing and criminal mischief. Sheen was picked up in Aspen for an alleged incident of domestic violence against wife Brook Mueller.

Expecting Parents

While the police may claim Sheen celebrated Christmas by honoring Chris Brown, his rep says otherwise:

"Do not be mislead by appearance. Appearance and reality can be as different as night and day. It would benefit everyone not to jump to any conclusion."

Sheen - who has been accused of sleeping with hookers, beating up dogs and keeping pornography on his computer while married to Denise Richards - is being held without bond.

He'll remain in jail until Monday, due to a Colorado law that requites a protection order between those arrested for domestic violence and their victims.

Sheen and Mueller got married in May 2008 and welcomed twins in October of that year.

** UPDATE: It's been confirmed that Mueller called 911 and claimed her husband laid his hands on her - but Sheen told cops that Mueller was the aggressor and he was simply trying to keep her away.

Terrorist Attack Detroit

A suspected terrorist tried to blow up a Detroit-bound transatlantic flight yesterday with 278 passengers before he was subdued, U.S. officials said.

The passenger was attempting to destroy the plane with an explosive device, said Peter King of New York, the top Republican on the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Homeland Security. White House officials said President Barack Obama is treating the incident as an attempted terrorist attack. King identified the suspect as Abdul Mudallad of Nigeria.

Oral Roberts Dead

Oral Roberts, a dirt-poor, Oklahoma farm boy who popularized the idea of a "prosperity gospel" while becoming one of the world's most recognizable televangelists, died Tuesday. He was 91.

Mr. Roberts, founder of the 5,400-student university in Tulsa, Okla., that is named after him, died of complications of pneumonia at a Newport Beach, Calif., hospital, family spokeswoman Melany Ethridge said.

Mr. Roberts became one of the most famous preachers of the 20th century by pioneering the use of television and computerized databases to spread the gospel and raise hundreds of millions of dollars -- a formula followed by many other ministries.

Using sophisticated direct-mail campaigns, Mr. Roberts popularized the "prosperity gospel," which asserts that God generously rewards financial acts of faith.

"It gives people hope and expectation that seeds sown to God will be multiplied back in every area of life," Mr. Roberts wrote in his 1995 autobiography, "Expect a Miracle: My Life and Ministry."

Mr. Roberts brought Pentecostalism -- which promotes charismatic worship including faith healing and speaking in tongues -- to the mainstream, giving it a newfound sense of legitimacy among the middle class and within other Christian denominations.

"More than any other person, he should be credited with starting the charismatic movement in mainline religion," said Vinson Synan, dean emeritus of the divinity school at Regent University in Virginia and historian of the Pentecostal movement. "He brought (divine) healing into the American consciousness."

Worldwide, the charismatic branch of Christianity -- now found in mainstream denominations as well as Pentecostalism -- grew from an estimated 20 million to 600 million during Mr. Roberts' decades in ministry. His international broadcasts and crusades deserve a large part of the credit for the increase, Christian scholars said.

In the 1970s, Mr. Roberts' prime-time specials drew 40 million viewers, and he appeared frequently on talk shows. He also had a program, "Something Good Is Going to Happen to You!," that aired Sundays.

At the time of his death, however, Mr. Roberts' ministry and celebrity had been in decline for years, a drop accelerated by a prophecy the preacher made 22 years ago that "God will call me home" unless $8 million was raised for scholarships to Oral Roberts University by March 31, 1987.

The money was raised, but by then, Mr. Roberts had become a laughingstock to many in and out of Christian world.

With dwindling revenues, the televangelist was forced in 1989 to downsize his ministry, laying off 250 employees, closing Tulsa's City of Faith medical center and an adjoining medical school and selling vacation homes and luxury cars.

A heart attack in 1992 forced him into semiretirement, although he remained the chancellor of Oral Roberts University. He spent most of his final years in a Newport Beach condominium with his wife, Evelyn, who died in April 2005. They had been married 66 years.

Mr. Roberts turned over the presidency of Oral Roberts University to his son, Richard. But he resigned in 2007 amid allegations that he had spent university money on personal expenses when the school was more than $50 million in debt.

dexter season 5

The Season 4 of hit show Dexter, left with a huge cliffhanger. With Rita Bennett (Dexter’s wife), and one other major characters being killed. The shows producers had said they wanted to give a shocking finale that no other show had done. Looks like they succeeded.

Clyde Phillips the executive producer explained,”The story evolved and it kind of became inevitable. We knew that we had to do more than kill Trinity. It’s a little bit of a corner that we paint ourselves into. Last year we tried to avoid that and actually I think we didn’t do as well as we could have.” in answer to why they also had Rita fall.

The shocking finale, on Sunday Dec 13, leaves us with a insight of Dexter’s own memories. And how he watched his mother die in front of him and also soaked in her blood, with Rita leaving to go to a romantic escapade only to forget her ID, this is when she ends up being murdered in the bathtub, by Trinity. Meanwhile the baby Harrison is left crying in a pool of her blood.
Phillips also revealed that Julie Benz who plays Rita, was not too happy about being killed off. “She loved being with us. We loved having her with us. She took it… professionally. She was greatly disappointed. She’s a professional. She works in television. She knew that this was a possibility.”

The writers also had an alternative ending for the finale, which was not chosen at the end. “While Dexter was packing to leave, he saw on the television that a child murderer had just escaped from prison. Either escaped or fallen thru the cracks. So he’s thinking, ‘Do I join Rita on vacation or do I…’ and then he looks towards the camera and he has this big decision,” Phillips explained.

We will be waiting till around September for the shows return, where we can see the outcome to Deb finding out that Dex is related to the Ice Truck Killer, and if she will find out about his alter ego.

We will all just have to wait on tender-hooks till it comes along.

‘Anti-social network’ aims to be Facebook killer app

Facebook makes you despair? Social networking makes you want to end it all? You may be ready for online ritual suicide with the aid of a new website that helps you kill your virtual identity.

‘Impress your friends, disconnect yourself,’ is the slogan on www.seppukoo.com, a site that aims to subvert Facebook by offering its millions of users a glorious end and a memorial page to match.

‘Rather than fall into the hands of their enemies, ancient Japanese samurai preferred to die with honour, voluntarily plunging a sword into the abdomen and moving it left to right in a slicing motion,’ the site notes.

This form of ritual suicide was known as ‘seppuku.’

‘As the seppuku restores the samurai’s honour as a warrior, seppukoo.com deals with the liberation of the digital body,’ the site says.

Today the enemy is not other bands of noble warriors but corporate media who use viral marketing to make huge profits by connecting people across the globe.

‘Seppukoo playfully attempts to subvert this mechanism by disconnecting people from each other and transforming the individual suicide experience into an exciting ‘social’ experience.’

The site, which uses its own viral marketing strategy to lure in disgruntled social networkers, is part of a protest wave that sees Facebook as a potentially dangerous entity beholden to corporate interests.

It offers ritual suicide for Facebook users in five easy steps.

Willing victims must first log in to seppukoo.com by typing in the same information they use to go on to their Facebook profile.

They then choose one of several memorial RIP page templates before writing their last words, which the site promises to send to all their Facebook friends when they have taken the final step.

Once the user has made that fatal final click, his or her Facebook profile is deactivated.

But in what might be seen as a bit of a cheat, virtual life goes on after the ritual suicide.

It comes in the form of testimonials friends can write on the memorial page or by rising in the seppukoo ranks by scoring points with every former Facebook friend who follows your lead and commits hara-kari.

The top scorer in that game is currently a blonde woman who uses the name Simona Lodi and who passed into the post-Facebook world on November 5. On her memorial page she chose to write ‘piss off!’ as her last words.

But seppukoo.com has some way to go before it attracts anything near the more than 300 million users Facebook currently boasts. On Wednesday it pulled in only half a dozen Facebookers ready to end it all.

Its owners – whose website says are an ‘imaginary art-group from Italy’ – told AFP by email that over 15,000 people had done the deed and over 350,000 Facebook users had received an invite to follow suit.

Facebook did not immediately reply when contacted by AFP to ask if it saw seppukoo.com as a threat and if it planned any action to block it.

To reinforce the tongue-in-cheek approach of seppukoo.com, the group’s art director – who uses the name Guy McMusker – replied when asked if he was a Facebook user: ‘Of course. We’re not Luddites. We’re incoherent.’

The group is called ‘Linking The Invisible’ and its website says it is made up of media artists Clemente Pestelli and Gionatan Quintini whose work explores ‘the invisible links between the infosphere, neural synapses, and real life.’

Seppukoo admits that it is in reality a social networking group but seeks to distinguish itself from Facebook by noting that it will store no data and its server will not sell data to any third party.

‘If you’ve trusted a merciless company (Facebook) until now, we hope you can also trust an imaginary artist group,’ it says. McMusker said the site was not set up with a view to making money.

The RIP memorial page it offers Facebook dissidents could easily be mistaken for a real memorial for a real deceased person. But McMusker rejected suggestions it was in bad taste and said that no-one was likely to be upset.

‘Just take it easy,’ he wrote.

In the real world, suicide is obviously a one-way trip. But in the virtual world even a would-be subversive site like seppukoo.com cannot prevent your resurrection.

If you realise that leaving Facebook was a mistake, all you have to do is log back on again and your profile is instantly restored.

ITALIAN TEAM LET " FAIR PLAY " GOAL

Legal and ethical questions surround Ascoli's decision to allow Reggina to score an unopposed goal in an effort to balance out a previous incident during an Italian second division (Serie B) match on Saturday.
Early in the first half, Reggina's Carlos Valdez pulled a muscle and attempted to kick the ball out of play so he could receive treatment. Oblivious to those intentions, Ascoli's Vincenzo Sommese intercepted the ball and set up teammate Mirko Antenucci for a goal as Reggina players protested.
A brawl ensued and Reggina defender Andrea Costa was sent off for hitting Sommese. Once the fury subsided and play resumed, Ascoli, sitting in the relegation zone at the bottom of the Serie B table, stood still to allow Reggina striker Biagio Pagano to score an uncontested goal in an attempt at fairness.
Ascoli's gesture did not bring them good karma for the rest of the match, though, as they lost 3-1 even though Reggina was a man down.

OBAMA'S NEW AFGHAN POLICY WILL BACKFIRE

Subjected to the law and order conditions in the coming years, the US authorities have decided to begin the withdrawal of their forces from Afghanistan by the mid of 2011.This news might have been a ray of hope and happiness for the distressed people of the region if it were not accompanied by another reference indicating the arrival of new American troops in Afghanistan. As announced by President Obama at least 30000 more soldiers will be deployed in Afghanistan by the end of this year. On the other hand Gordon Brown, the British prime minister has announced the arrival of an additional 500 U.K. troops in southern Afghanistan next month. That would bring the British force to 10,000. The U.S commitment in Afghanistan is not open-ended; the philosophy behind sending new troops is nothing but a sincere attempt of training Afghan forces to take over the fight and allow American troops to leave , says the White House. President Obama has assured that his new Afghan Policy will put the U.S on a path toward ending the war, but no exact timetable could be offered in this regard.

President Obama seems very much conscious and worried about the expected role of Taliban and Al-Qaida in the Afghanistan of tomorrow. His statements regarding his new Afghan Policy show that he has some hidden fears regarding the so-called concealed relationship between Pakistan and the Islamic extremists; but in his entire policy statements one never finds any reference to the intriguing role of India. God knows better if it is an intentional ignorance or misconception based on misunderstanding of the day light facts. It would have been much better if the honourable President Obama had taken some precautionary measures keeping in view the role of India in the future Afghanistan also. India would be the actual root cause of all disturbances in Afghanistan when the US troops have with drawn from there.

In the last few years, under the kind support of President Karzai, India has very successfully tried to involve herself in every walk of life in Afghanistan. Although this process of involvement is not a newly started venture, yet in the past few years it expedited in a more violent manner. India is now one of Afghanistan’s top six donors. Not only in the field of economic support, but also in all other possible sections of political and non-political relationship, we find India swiftly stepping forward. But it would be a folly to name this relationship the Indo-Afghan friendship; it is simply the India-Karzai relationship. No Karzai, no friendship. The Afghan president is acting as a spokesman of India. In commemoration to his services he was awarded the Indra Gandhi Prize for Peace and International Understanding. Since 2001 till now, the government of India has transferred billions of dollars to the official accounts of the Afghan government in the name of rehabilitation work in Afghanistan. On the basis of this economic support India virtually started undertaking projects in all parts of Afghanistan in collaboration with the Afghan government. In a variety of sectors including road transportation, airlines, health, education, police, judiciary, agriculture, industry, information technology and broadcasting, the Indian involvement can be easily noticed. Making the Afghan government realize that the local Afghan people don’t have sufficient ability to utilize the donated dollars, the Indian government planned to send its own citizens for working on different projects in Afghanistan. For this purpose, such projects were selected in which a large number of workers were required. Indra Gandhi Institute of Child Health was also one of these selected projects. In august, 2002, India announced US $ 4 Million for the rehabilitation of this child health institute. Later on an additional grant of US $ 100,000 was approved for the same project in the next year. It was in June 2003, when the government of India asked for a permission from the government of Afghanistan to hand over the rehabilitation work of this health unit to the Central Public Works Department of India. Permission was granted and ultimately a huge procession of Indian citizens landed in the war-stricken valleys of Afghanistan. Doctors, nurses, technicians, and so many others including the paramedical staff and the trainers; and most of them were the agents of Raw in disguise. Since Afghanistan is continuously in a state of war, there is no check and balance over the foreigners; it proved very easy for them to mix up in the social fiber. Some of them succeeded in seeping into the Taliban groups which have been fighting against the US invasion in Afghanistan since long. Most of these agents of Raw, imported from India, had nothing to do with Islam or Islamic extremism because they were Hindus not Muslims. It was because of their skillful and masterly training that the Taliban could not recognize their reality. These agents under the garb of Indra Gandhi Health Institute Workers very successfully took care of the Indian interests in Afghanistan. Moreover their presence in Afghanistan provided the Indian government a solid ground for opening so many consulates along the Pak-Afghan borders. To run these consulates India once again got a chance of sending new agents of Raw in guise of the consulate-staff. The story behind the Indra Gandhi Institute of Child Health is just a single page from a huge book of conspiracies; the whole book reading would require a lot of time. What is going to happen when there is no USA in Afghanistan? Would the Islamic extremist be ready to permit India gain a total control over the Afghan society? Will the Taliban forget the supporting role of India for Russia during the Russian attempt of Afghan occupation? So many questions are eager to be answered. The dream of a peaceful Afghanistan can never be realized unless Indian involvement is ‘excavated’ from there. Although President Obama has tried to put India aside in his recently announced Afghan Policy yet the situation demands more in this context.

Swiss ban mosque minarets

Swiss voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional ban on minarets on Sunday, barring construction of the iconic mosque towers in a surprise vote that put Switzerland at the forefront of a European backlash against a growing Muslim population.

Muslim groups in Switzerland and abroad condemned the vote as biased and anti-Islamic. Business groups said the decision hurt Switzerland's international standing and could damage relations with Muslim nations and wealthy investors who bank, travel and shop there.

"The Swiss have failed to give a clear signal for diversity, freedom of religion and human rights," said Omar Al-Rawi, integration representative of the Islamic Denomination in Austria, which said its reaction was "grief and deep disappointment."

About 300 people turned out for a spontaneous demonstration on the square outside parliament, holding up signs saying, "That is not my Switzerland," placing candles in front of a model of a minaret and making another minaret shape out of the candles themselves.

"We're sorry," said another sign. A young woman pinned to her jacket a piece of paper saying, "Swiss passport for sale."

The referendum by the nationalist Swiss People's Party labeled minarets as symbols of rising Muslim political power that could one day transform Switzerland into an Islamic nation. The initiative was approved 57.5 to 42.5 percent by some 2.67 million voters. Only four of the 26 cantons or states opposed the initiative, granting the double approval that makes it part of the Swiss constitution.

Muslims comprise about 6 percent of Switzerland's 7.5 million people. Many are refugees from the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s and about one in 10 actively practices their religion, the government says.

The country's four standing minarets, which won't be affected by the ban, do not traditionally broadcast the call to prayer outside their own buildings.

The sponsors of the initiative provoked complaints of bias from local officials and human-rights group with campaign posters that showed minarets rising like missiles from the Swiss flag next to a fully veiled woman. Backers said the growing Muslim population was straining the country "because Muslims don't just practice religion."

"The minaret is a sign of political power and demand, comparable with whole-body covering by the burqa, tolerance of forced marriage and genital mutilation of girls," the sponsors said. They said Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan compared mosques to Islam's military barracks and called "the minarets our bayonets." Erdogan made the comment in citing an Islamic poem many years before he became prime minister.

Anxieties about growing Muslim minorities have rippled across Europe in recent years, leading to legal changes in some countries. There have been French moves to ban the full-length body covering known as the burqa. Some German states have introduced bans on head scarves for Muslim women teaching in public schools. Mosques and minaret construction projects in Sweden, France, Italy, Austria, Greece, Germany andSlovenia have been met by protests.

But the Swiss ban in minarets, sponsored by the country's largest political party, was one of the most extreme reactions.

"It's a sad day for freedom of religion," said Mohammed Shafiq, the chief executive of the Ramadhan Foundation, a British youth organization. "A constitutional amendment that's targeted towards one religious community is discriminatory and abhorrent."

He said he was concerned the decision could have reverberations in other European countries.

Amnesty International said the vote violated freedom of religion and would probably be overturned by the Swiss supreme court or the European Court of Human Rights.

The seven-member Cabinet that heads the Swiss government had spoken out strongly against the initiative but the government said it accepted the vote and would impose an immediate ban on minaret construction.

It said that "Muslims in Switzerland are able to practice their religion alone or in community with others, and live according to their beliefs just as before." It took the unusual step of issuing its press release in Arabic as well as German, French, Italian and English.

Sunday's results stood in stark contrast to opinion polls, last taken 10 days ago, that showed 37 percent supporting the proposal. Experts said before the vote that they feared Swiss had pretended during the polling that they opposed the ban because they didn't want to appear intolerant.

"The sponsors of the ban have achieved something everyone wanted to prevent, and that is to influence and change the relations to Muslims and their social integration in a negative way," said Taner Hatipoglu, president of the Federation of Islamic Organizations in Zurich. "Muslims indeed will not feel safe anymore."

The People's Party has campaigned mainly unsuccessfully in previous years against immigrants with campaign posters showing white sheep kicking a black sheep off the Swiss flag and another with brown hands grabbing eagerly for Swiss passports.

Geneva's main mosque was vandalized Thursday when someone threw a pot of pink paint at the entrance. Earlier this month, a vehicle with a loudspeaker drove through the area imitating a muezzin's call to prayer, and vandals damaged a mosaic when they threw cobblestones at the building.

tagine

Tagine/Tajine

A Tagine or Tajine is a traditional way of cooking in a special type of pot or dish, the cooking style and the type of dishes though differs according to time and place but the basics are more or less same.Tagine type of dish found in the North African cuisines of Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia, which is named after the special pot in which it is cooked. A similar dish, known as Tavvas, is found in the cuisine of Cyprus.

Usually the traditional Tagine pot is formed entirely of a heavy clay which is sometimes painted or glazed. It consists of two parts; a base unit which is flat and circular with low sides, and a large cone or dome-shaped cover that rests inside the base during cooking. The cover is so designed to promote the return of all condensation to the bottom. With the cover removed, the base can be taken to the table for serving.

The most well known tagineand claimed to be original is Moroccan tajine cuisine which are slow-cooked stews braised at low temperatures, resulting in tender meat with aromatic vegetables and sauce. They are traditionally cooked in the tajine pot, whose cover has a knob-like handle at its top to facilitate removal. While simmering, the cover can be lifted off without the aid of a mitten, enabling the cook to inspect the main ingredients, add vegetables, move things around, or add additional braising liquid.

Due to fulfill the increasing demand of customers, very recently European manufacturers also have created tajines with heavy cast iron bottoms that can be fired on a stovetop at high heat. This permits browning meat and vegetables before cooking. While the similar Dutch oven help braises most efficiently in the oven, the tajine braises best on the stovetop.

How Did Hackers Cripple Twitter?

Hackers slowed Twitter to a standstill early on Aug. 6, frustrating millions of users. For the culprits, all it took to snarl the popular social-networking site was one of the oldest tools in the Internet hacker handbook: the distributed denial-of-service attack (commonly shortened to DDoS), a method that has been used to crash some of the Web's largest sites, including Yahoo! and CNN.

DDoS attacks are surprisingly low tech. Using a network of computers (dubbed zombies) controlled by a single master machine, the hacker tries to overwhelm a website's servers. It's a brute-force approach — the network of hacker-controlled computers floods the server with requests for data until the server overloads and comes crashing down. Graham Cluley, a computer security expert, likened the attack to "15 fat men trying to get through a revolving door at the same time." The attacks do no lasting damage — user data aren't compromised, and the site isn't down for long. Once the fat men stop rushing the doors, everything returns to normal.

Adding to the chaos is the fact that the zombie computers often show no signs of being infected. Hackers look for computers with security vulnerabilities and infect them in advance of an attack. When the hackers are ready to launch the assault, the master computer awakens its zombie army, and the attack begins. Because DDoS utilizes multiple computers from multiple locations — and because hackers may use their network for only a single attack — there's no way to protect against a seemingly random array of computers suddenly going rogue. Once the attack begins, websites can try to trace the sudden flood of traffic back to the source computer and filter it out, but even that's a complex process. Internet service providers say they're rarely able to identify the master computer behind a DDoS attack.

This method of causing computer chaos has been used at least as far back as 1998, when the first software tools were developed to assist in DDoS assaults. But the attacks didn't garner much attention until 2000, when Amazon, eBay, Yahoo! and CNN were brought down in a single week by a Canadian teenager. They've been a scourge ever since and have even been employed in cyberwarfare. During the war between Russia and Georgia last year, hackers brought down several Georgian websites using a DDoS attack. And in the aftermath of Iran's tumultuous election in June, several international computer networks were trained to take down sites belonging to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

While some Facebook services were unavailable early Aug. 6, Facebook officials said it wasn't immediately clear if it was related to the Twitter attack

iphone virus

iPhone Virus News: possible iPhone Virus is to be unleashed Thursday. Two researchers,Charles Miller and fellow cybersecurity researcher, Collin Mulliner, have found an iPhone bug that could infect phones virally through SMS. The have plans to reveal the still unpatchediPhone bug at the Black Hat cybersecurity conference in Las Vegas today. If you receive a text message with a single square character, you are advised to immediately turn off youriPhone, as they warn it means that someone has used the bug to take over your iPhone.

“This is serious. The only thing you can do to prevent it is turn off your phone,” said cybersecurity researcher Charles Miller. “Someone could pretty quickly take over everyiPhone in the world with this.”

The two found the bug in the way the iPhone handles text messages. Once in control, the hacker has complete control over your iPhone, allowing them to make calls, visit websites, turn on the camera and more importantly they can keep sending the bug via SMS.

They have reached out to Apple, well over a month ago about this vulnerability but have not heard back. Back in 2007, Charles Miller also found a bug that allowed someone to remotely hijack the iPhone using the browser.

It’s not clear if Apple has included a fix in iPhone OS 3.1, which recently entered beta 3 stage, so will not be ready by Thursday. Be careful out there and maybe we’ll have more information this afternoon on a possible fix from Apple.

It’s not an iPhone virus, it’s just a security hole. Although Apple was notified by the iPhoneSMS hack about 6 weeks ago, the company didn’t address this glitch and at the moment there is no patch that could fix it. According to the researchers, the iPhone SMS hack is possible thanks to a “serious memory corruption bug” caused by the way the iPhone handles an SMS.

Mulliner said that an similar SMS hack was found in the Android OS last week, and after only one day Google patched the security hole. Take that Apple! Why wouldn’t Apple patch theiPhone if the company knows about the security hole? What are these guys waiting? To hack every iPhone in the world? We’re waiting, but we’re not patient anymore.

gongoozler

Gongoozler is a person who enjoys watching activity on the canals in the United Kingdom. The term is also often used in a more general way to describe those who have an interest in canals and the canal life, but do not actively participate.
Contents
"Gongoozler" may have been canal workers’ slang for an observer standing apparently idle on the towpath. Although it was certainly used derisively in the past there is only very mild derision attached to the term today, and it is regularly used, perhaps with a little irony, by gongoozlers to describe themselves and their hobby.

The word may have arisen from words in Lincolnshire dialect: gawn and gooze, both meaning to stare or gape. Although it might be presumed that such an expression would date from the nineteenth century, when canals were at their peak, the word is only recorded from the end of that century or the early twentieth. It was given wider use by the late L. T. C. Rolt, who used it in his book about canal life, Narrow Boat, in 1944.

"Gongoozler" as a term may also be used in any circumstance in which people are spectating without contributing to either the content or interest of an event.

Gongoozling, much like trainspotting, is a hobby that can extend to all aspects of canals.

Canal artwork

The collection or creation of canal related artwork is a common pastime amongst gongoozlers. This includes paintings, postcards and photographs.

Canal locks often attract spectators, including gongoozlers, because the operation of manual canal locks is a complex affair, with a number of opportunities for mistakes to be made. Some observers have been known to heckle or harass the boat crews, whilst others carry "lock keys" and actively wish to help boat crews with their passage.

Canal history and technology

Whilst trainspotting is commonly associated with identifying engine makes, it is rare for Gongoozlers to do likewise. However an interest can occur for the history of a section of canal, or the operation of locks and alternative devices such as inclined planes, water slopes, and boat lifts with types like the Anderton boat lift, the Falkirk Wheel and the Strépy-Thieu boat lift.

boat trip

The recent Merrimack River Boat Cruise sponsored by the Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank was a delightful experience. Richie Eaton, in his usual friendly manner, greeted each and every person as we boarded, and again as we left. We were treated to ice cream, and other snacks were available, and the weather was perfect.

I know of no other bank or business that does anything like this to show appreciation to its customers.

My son-in-law, who, with my daughter, was visiting, was so impressed by this courtesy that he was going to tell the bank officials in the town they will be moving to what a wonderful gesture this was.

We all express our sincere thanks for this pleasant experience.

sommelier

How cool is a new wine competition that features only sommeliers judging wines?

  • They’ve got great palates.
  • They’ve been classically trained.
  • They’ve been brought together by Robert Whitley, master of wine competitions. (Monterey, San Diego, Critics Challenge, and now this one.)

The Sommelier Challenge International Wine Competition is another option for a credible third party endorsement. Yes, more and more people are depending on their peers for wine reviews; however, once they hit that supermarket shelf, they’re still wowed by numbers and medals. Another endorsement, beyond their own friends, still has a way of sealing the deal. Most people still don’t want to purchase something as a gamble, most especially on higher priced ticket items.

Top Sommeliers Focus of New Wine Competition

San Diego, Calif. – Having wines tasted by some of the nation’s top restaurant sommeliers is the wine salesperson’s hope. Receiving a Platinum, Gold or Silver award from this same elite group is the marketer’s dream. Both opportunities are presented in a new international wine competition – the Sommelier Challenge, debuting the weekend of September 26-27, 2009.

Created by respected competition director and syndicated wine writer Robert Whitley, the Sommelier Challenge is the second in his “challenge” series of wine competitions. Whitley created the Critics Challenge six years ago, featuring noted wine journalist judges who issue quotable comments to award-winning wines. Whitley also directs the San Diego and Monterey international wine competitions, and is publisher of Wine Review Online, the Internet’s respected wine journal.

“Sommeliers are on the front line with consumers. They are the wine mavens who influence what wines you try and what wines end up on a restaurant list. The Sommelier Challenge International Wine Competition gives wineries a chance to put their wines in front of these influencers and receive an award they can market,” says Whitley.

Twelve sommeliers will judge this year’s competition representing restaurants such as The French Laundry (Yountville), Per Se ( New York City ), Charlie Trotter’s ( Las Vegas ), and Sona ( Los Angeles ), among others. The competition deadline is August 31, 2009. A complete list of judges, entry information and form can be found at www.sommelierchallenge.com.

encyclopedia of life

The Encyclopedia of Life aims to digitize and make available all information on every species known to exist! There are about 1.8 million living species known to science. This might be a huge endeavor but it has already taken off with a good start since it went online on February 2008. You should check out Encyclopedia of Life for details.

In addition, the Encyclopedia will incorporate the Biodiversity Heritage Library, which will contain the digitized print collections from the world's major natural history libraries. The project is initially backed by a US$50 million funding commitment, led by the MacArthur Foundation and the Sloan Foundation.

malibu shark attack

Malibu Shark Attack, Fango spoke to longtime New Zealand producer Dale Bradley, who tackled his first job in Australia with MALIBU SHARK ATTACK, a killer-fish film that lensed in Queensland under the title GOBLIN SHARK ATTACK and premieres on the Sci Fi Channel (which co-produced the movie, and is soon to be known as Syfy) this summer. Bradley passed on a couple of production pics (see them below), and explains the flick’s odd original monikerMalibu Shark Attack.

The onscreen predators “are based on a species called goblin sharks [see art at bottom], which don’t look like your normal great white,” Bradley tells us. “They’re very fearsome-looking creatures. Ours are actually larger than the real thing, but modeled on them for the look that the CG company created. People do catch these things, but ours are monsters that get released from a big underground cavern during a seaquake. The resulting tsunami washes them ashore. Not only do car parks and basements get flooded, but we have sharks inside the buildings as well. There’s a recipe for something cool there.”
This production, whose plot is quite similar to that of the subsequently announced Russell Mulcahy project BAIT (see item here) stars local-born LA FEMME NIKITA star Peta Wilson as lifeguard heroine Heather. Her fellow cast members include Warren Christie, FINAL DESTINATION 3’s Chelan Simmons, BLOOD ANGELS’ Sonya Salomaa, Rachel Barton, Remi Broadway, Jeff Gannon and UNDEAD’s Mungo McKay. The director is BLOOD OF BEASTS’ David Lister, with previously announced helmer Brian Trenchard-Smith remaining on board as a producer.
“The central characters are lifeguards on Malibu Beach,” Bradley explains, “who survive the wave but get trapped under their building. The sharks know they are there and break in. There’s another great location—a construction site that’s also flooded—and the survivors manage to escape there, thinking it’s safe. But next thing, the sharks bash down the roller doors and swim inside, so they’re trapped in the basement. We’ve got a bit of ALIEN in there, and some good mayhem: amputations, people chopped in half. We shot one today featuring some lovely prosthetic work by makeup artist Sharon Robberts where a guy has lost both his legs. We’ve got another scene that’s a bit of a homage to JAWS 3-D, where a parasailor gets into all sorts of trouble and ends up being half the man he used to be.
